Background

Bournemouth University have established a track record in delivering high quality, industry related teaching and learning that facilitates their students to embark on successful careers.

Due to the growing Esports market both within HE and FE, the university wanted to introduce a similar course with a ‘technology take’ to help and support a wide range of career outcomes.

The newly introduced BSc Esports Digital Technologies degree programme wanted to promote the concept of a wider ecosystem and pipeline that provides the technology, services, commercial acumen, event management and team working skills.

Core themes within the degree:

  • Streaming and Digital Broadcast
  • Digital Content Creation
  • Business and Event Management
  • Gaming Technologies
  • Ethical, Moral and Wellbeing Responsibilities

Project brief

The university wanted to create a dedicated show-piece lab and approached TOP-TEC Esports to discuss next steps. They wanted to divert from the traditional darker Esports environment to something much more colourful, vibrant and inspirational for the students.

Due to the technological aspect of the course, they needed something completely bespoke to allow for the integration of streaming equipment for students to stream platforms such as YouTube and Twitch in real time from the lab, which would be both technically and operationally challenging!

Working alongside integrator GVAV, the university had a clear vision of the equipment they needed and how it would be laid out with minimal cable intrusion with the aim of creating clean, professional and slick streaming hubs for each student.

To help achieve inclusivity within the space, the room would also require height adjustable positions to allow for students with all height requirements to take part in the new Esports course.

Key project criteria:

  • Create a colourful, vibrant and inspirational Esports space for the students.
  • Effectively integrate all of the streaming equipment to create clean, professional and slick streaming hubs for each student.
  • Incorporate height adjustable positions within the space for inclusivity of all students taking part in the course.

Decision Process

Starting with our Nebula Booth design, we were able to modify the unit to suit Bournemouth’s exact requirements. Following several meetings with our design department, the new solution began to take shape with the design evolving as the equipment was finalised.

All technical equipment selections and installation details were coordinated with GVAV, who provided system integration and installation services for the AV hardware within each desk.

Discussions were had around cable management and also the importance of security for the gaming PC, which was placed on top of the unit with a secure clamp.

We were able to respond to requests post delivery of the prototype with some alteration and amends made including retrospective upgrades such as adding a desktop mains switch for bulk control of power, and alterations to how LED light controllers were mounted to allow for all the power strips.

Making sure it all fits!

We developed a prototype for the University for a proof of concept, followed by fit test with the specified kit which allowed them to work with GVAV to identify suitable cabling and mains power routing.

“Create a colourful, vibrant and inspirational Esports space for the students.”

TOP-TEC Esports have a rich history of providing immersive Esports spaces and were confident that we could help bring Bournemouth University’s vision to life.

The LED lights, illuminated branding and the bright blue metalwork make players feel more immersed in the gaming space, enhancing engagement, focus and concentration.

“Effectively integrate all of the streaming equipment to create clean, professional and slick streaming hubs for each student.”

As an in-house designer and manufacturer of Esports Gaming Workstations, were able to create units designed with the University’s specific equipment and needs in mind, resulting in fit-for-purpose comfortable high performance workstations for gamers taking part in the new Esports course.

“Incorporate height adjustable positions within the space for inclusivity of all students taking part in the course.”

Height adjustable and fully accessible options were included for inclusivity of all students and for Equality Act compliance within the space.

The Result

Since the installation, the room has received some excellent feedback from students who have been utilising the new space and loving the new experience!

The space has quickly become a favourite across campus, with students eagerly anticipating their classes.

People love the colour and with the vinyl wall art mural commissioned by the University, drawing from the blue colour, the room has a very creative feel and visual impact.
